THE IMPOSSIBLE COLLECTION OF DESIGN

In recent years, the decorative furnishings niche has become of tremendous interest to collectors, causing a surge in the auction market and bringing record sales. Chosen by design expert Frédéric Chambre, this selection of furniture designs unspools like the frames of a film, an epic picture composed of one hundred years of creative innovations in form, materials, and techniques. As in art history, themes can be traced across changing trends: design versus the machine, design versus craft, design versus art—a story that continues to unfold. This hand-bound oversize luxury edition traces the development of twentieth-century design from the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements through Bauhaus and Art Deco, Pop Art and the Memphis school, to today’s digital age, illustrating the dynamic story of a groundbreaking century through the evolution of everyday human objects.

Complimentary white gloves and signature canvas tote bag are included with each purchase from Assouline's Ultimate Collection

With degrees in law and art history, Frédéric Chambre became a partner at the Calmels-Chambre-Cohen auction house in 1996. Chambre co-founded Pierre Bergé and Associates in 2002, and became vice president and partner in 2005; he was co-organizer of the February 2009 sale of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection at Christie’s in Paris. In 2012 Chambre joined PIASA as head of strategy and development, and he is currently vice president and general manager.

 DESCRIPTION

With Folkifunki we have created a number of unique pieces of art and with character.

Thanks to the artistic slant so striking and so personal, each element in the collection can mingle with other elements or be presented on its own, displayed on any table or even hung on the wall as a decorative object. Following an increasingly common trend of combining distinct forms, playing with and enjoying the objects that surround us, reflecting who we are.

The inspiration of the details that constitute each piece comes from my vision of what Portugal is. Iconic elements like the rooster, the fishes, the animals, as well as the countryside and the details of the tiles, all translated from my point of view: full of fantasy, where imagination has no limits.

The shapes of the decorative pieces are folkloric, surreal, rural and with a dash of humour. Art, craftsmanship in producing the porcelain and applying decorations - watercolour, gold, lines and details – make this a very special set.

I love the surprise of discovering the details while I eat. Finding characters, colours, constellations, where each element tells a story, creating endless narratives, depending on how the compositions are made. The interaction with each piece is unique, different and exciting.
